The Lagos State Police Command has discovered a suspected indoor cannabis farm operating inside a residential building in the Apapa area of the state.
According to a viral video shared by News Central, an apartment that appeared to be an ordinary residential property had allegedly been converted into a facility for cultivating cannabis.
The cannabis plants, which reportedly require about three months to mature, were allegedly being grown for distribution and sale in the illegal drug market.
The report indicated that two individuals were involved in the incident: a foreign national who was allegedly trafficked into Nigeria and a Nigerian identified as the property manager of the building where the farm was discovered.
In the video, the property manager, whose name was not disclosed, claimed that he only offered assistance to the foreigner, who was allegedly stranded in Nigeria after the company that brought him into the country abandoned him.
He explained that the foreigner later approached him with the idea, adding that he agreed to help because he wanted the man to find a way back to his home country.
The property manager, however, admitted that he knew the activity was not legally authorised by the government but insisted that he had no intention of making money from the operation.
He further claimed that the foreigner was apprehended while attempting to sell the cannabis, although he could not explain who the man had contacted before the operation was uncovered.
Reacting to the discovery, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, described the operation as another major breakthrough in the Command’s efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking.
Fatai expressed surprise that such an operation was taking place within a residential community, noting that the cannabis plants were being cultivated in containers before being harvested and distributed into society.
He also urged residents to pay closer attention to activities within their neighbourhoods and be more aware of what their neighbours do.
The Police Command stated that investigations are ongoing, reaffirming its commitment to tackling the cultivation, trafficking and distribution of illegal drugs across the state.AGO
