The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) overseeing Zone 11 Headquarters in Osogbo, Bassey Ewah, has addressed a viral social media video allegedly showing some police officers assaulting a suspect in Ede, Osun State, on Wednesday.
In a statement released on Thursday by the Zone 11 Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ojedele Tunji, the AIG expressed serious concern over the incident, stressing that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) does not tolerate brutality, intimidation or the abuse of authority by its officers.
Ewah stated that although police personnel have a constitutional responsibility to enforce the law and maintain public order, they must carry out their duties with professionalism, discipline, restraint and respect for the fundamental rights and dignity of citizens.
The statement disclosed that the officers allegedly involved in the incident had been identified, adding that measures were already underway to ensure a comprehensive investigation.
It further warned that any officer found guilty of misconduct or violating established police regulations would face appropriate disciplinary action in line with the laws and regulations governing the Nigeria Police Force.
The AIG also reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to transparency, accountability, human rights protection and the safety of lives and property.
He maintained that no police officer is above the law, emphasising that wearing a police uniform does not give anyone the right to violate the rights of members of the public.
Ewah appealed to residents and members of the public to remain calm, refrain from making premature judgments and allow the relevant authorities to carry out a proper investigation into the matter.
He also assured residents of Osun and Oyo States that Zone 11 Headquarters would continue to uphold professionalism, discipline and accountability while working to maintain public confidence and trust in the Nigeria Police Force.
