The Association of Medical and Dental Officers (AMDO), Oyo State chapter, has called off its industrial action, directing members to return to work after one week of striking.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the doctors, who began the strike on October 26, resumed their duties on Monday, November 2.
Medical personnel at several health facilities, including Ring Road State Hospital, Government Chest Hospital, Jericho Specialist Hospital and Oni Memorial Children Hospital, were among those who returned to work.
The resumption followed the association’s decision to suspend the week-long industrial action over unresolved welfare concerns.
AMDO had embarked on the strike to demand improved welfare packages, payment of outstanding allowances, recruitment of additional medical officers and other conditions affecting its members.
In a statement released on Monday, the association’s General Secretary, Dr Abdulazeez Gbadamosi, disclosed that the decision to suspend the strike was reached during an emergency congress held on Sunday.
He said the association’s Executive Council appreciated members for their commitment to the industrial action and the confidence they had shown in its leadership.
Gbadamosi also expressed gratitude to senior members and other stakeholders who participated in the mediation process, noting that their interventions had helped restore industrial harmony to some extent.
According to him, the congress resolved to suspend the strike from November 2 to November 15 to create room for further negotiations with the relevant authorities.
He subsequently directed all members to resume full clinical duties from 8 a.m. on Monday.
The general secretary added that the association would assess the progress of ongoing discussions before deciding on its next course of action.
