The Edo State Police Command has appealed to residents to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities, while avoiding any actions that could threaten public peace, safety and order across the state.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the warning followed reports from members of the public concerning social media posts allegedly encouraging people to participate in a planned protest.
The statement quoted the Commissioner of Police, CP Patrick Daaor, as recognising the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful protest. However, he urged individuals with grievances to seek redress through lawful and appropriate channels rather than resorting to actions that could disrupt the existing peace.
Daaor warned against acts of violence, destruction of property, blocking of public roads and other activities capable of endangering public safety and order. He stressed that the Command would not permit unlawful conduct by individuals or groups.
The Police Command also assured residents that necessary security measures were being deployed to safeguard lives and property throughout the state.
Residents were encouraged to report suspicious activities or security concerns promptly through the Police Emergency Control Room at 08077773721, 08067551618, 08056776365, 08123827225 and 08037646272.
Complaints against police personnel can also be directed to the Complaint Response Unit (CRU), Benin, through 08100389992 and 08150999335.
